Snow Covered Amish Country

January 6, 2010 | Category: Travel | Posted by: Sarah

The past month or so has brought a lot of snow to Lancaster County. We’ve had a few coatings of snow, like this morning, and we’ve had one pretty big storm (some places getting up to 2 feet of snow!). Lancaster County is the perfect destination for a nice, cozy, weekend winter vacation for family or friends. It’s a different experience to see the Amish horses out pulling sleighs instead of buggies – and you can even ride in one, when there’s enough snow covering the ground!

If you’re like me, and not the type to want to go out when it’s cold outside, tons of the bed & breakfasts, inns and hotels have fireplaces in the rooms. I can’t think of a better way to spend a relaxing vacation than to curl by the fire, watching the flames, and the snow falling outside your window. The kids can go to the indoor pool, or outside to play and get their energy out while you relax!

Why is “Dutch” perpetuated when it originates from an error in interpreting “Deutsch,” which means “German” – in German?

This leads visitors as well as locals to think Lancaster has some relationship to Holland that it does not and never had. Makes us look rather ignorant, no?

    Thanks.

I really think the locals know that the Amish are German, being they speak in German frequently in public. As far as the tourists go there are many FREE booklets available at many locations that explain the Amish culture. Just pick it up and read and you won’t be ignorant or mislead any longer.
